Purpose: The purpose is to provide the student of language pathology a comprehensive source from leaders in the field. These are worthy objectives which have been adequately met.
Audience: According to the editor, this book is written for the student; I agree. This would be a valuable text for undergraduate and graduate level language courses. It provides a broad foundation from which to build a thorough aphasia course.
Features: Many aspects of aphasia are covered from an historical perspective. Clinical signs, assessment, and treatment; levels of processing including phonological, lexical, and sentence; artistry; intelligence; psychological signs; and bilingualism are all discussed. The additions of aphasia in the bilingual person and multicultural issues are incredibly important and reflect the cultural changes that have occurred since the second edition was published.
Assessment: This third edition reflects the change in the knowledge base and perspective of the disciplines working with aphasic individuals since the previous edition (1991). Personally, I think that this is a comprehensive, logically organized book. It will be quite useful as a basic classroom aphasia text.

Added chapters on bilingualism and multicultural issues help update the 1991 edition with new research and clinical findings in aphasia<-->defined as the disturbance of the complex process of comprehending and formulating verbal messages due to acquired disease of the central nervous system. Following a historical perspective on speechlessness, 29 primarily US contributors address aphasia as related to: signs of the major types, neuroanatomical correlates, assessment, phonology, lexical deficits, sentence processing, apraxia, related disorders, intelligence, artistry, aging, children, traumatic brain injury, ethnocultural dynamics, socio- psychological sequelae, and recovery and rehabilitation.
