Overview

Forty-five-year-old English professor Nathan Qells is very good at making people feel important. What he’s not very good at is sticking around afterward. He’s a nice guy; he just doesn’t feel things the way other people do. So even after all the time he’s spent taking care of Michael, the kid across the hall, he doesn’t realize that Michael’s mob muscle uncle and guardian, Andreo Fiore, has slowly been falling in love with him.

Dreo has bigger problems than getting Nate to see him as a potential partner. He’s raising his nephew, trying to leave his unsavory job, and starting his own business, a process made infinitely more difficult when a series of hits takes out some key underworld players. Still, Dreo is determined to build a life he can be proud of—a life with Nate as a cornerstone. A life that is starting to look like exactly what Nate has been seeking. Unfortunately for Dreo—and for Nate—the last hits were just part of a major reorganization, and Dreo’s obvious love for Nate has made him a target too.

    Loved this story and characters!

    My Review:

Wow, what a really powerful and amazing love story. I love the way this book is set up. Because I really didn't pay that close of attention to the story description, I thought the story was going a whole other way and happy about it. BUT the passion that Mary Calmes writes into her characters is so real and so true, once things started changing, I was excited about it.

There was so much about this book that I simply loved:
*Melissa- Nate's ex-wife. He slept with a woman once...and yep, got her pregnant. They were teens, he was gay, but they stayed married for 10 years and remain best friends 30 years after the fact. I love how close they are and how she keeps pushing him to find a man that he can fall in love with, because she knows he's never truly been in love in a truly passionate way.

*Ben- Melissa's husband, who is close to Nate too despite the history there with his now wife. The camaraderie there is awesome...and actually this is true of all of Nate's friends. He's someone that's smart and fun to be around and his friends recognize that. Everyone, both men and women, are drawn to him because he's a genuine person.

*Michael- the 16 yo that lives across the hall with his uncle Dreo. He's come to rely on Nate as a parental figure and I really love their relationship. It's filled with mutual respect and love. I enjoyed their scenes together in this book as much as anything.

*Nate- I loved his character. I loved the fact that he doesn't see his own appeal. He genuinely cares about people and that comes across in everything that he does from teaching his classes to hanging out with friends.

*Dreo- OMG, best character ever and I NEVER thought I would say that about a guy who works as a mobster's bodyguard. Michael came to him 4 years ago when Dreo's sister died. He took the job so he could provide a good home for Michael. That home brought him to living across the hall from Nate. He's NEVER let on, not even a hint, that he's interested in Nate or that he's even gay. But when he decides to let go of his emotions and to become involved....OMG, this guy is so incredibly sexy in his passion and need and love for Nate. So sexy. There's a vulnerable side to him too because he lays it all out there. Such a gorgeous aspect to this story.

I really adored this book. The witty dialogue was fun to read and kept me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Dreo is this quiet, huge guy, but he has so much emotion within him, it takes the emotional level of this book through the roof. There was even a bit of suspense that added to the drama of it all and I do love a bit of suspense added to my romance novels. The entire book was just incredibly well-written and I am so glad that I got to read it.

English professor Nathan Quells is always a crowd pleaser. He loves taking care of others. He’s good at it. Everyone seems to love him, even the most unsuspecting characters. Andreo Fiore is caught in the mob and when Nate finds himself taking care of his nephew, Michael, Dreo slowly falls in love with Nate over the course of the four years that they have known each other.

In ACROBAT, the story was inspired by a painting Mary Calmes saw (which is now the cover). She wanted to know what the story was behind the two men in a tangle together. In the end, the story became ACROBAT, a charming, sweet and powerful story of finally giving in and falling in love.

Dreo’s feelings for Nate have been stewing for years so I can understand when people say that his feelings came on too fast. It’s because readers don’t get that sense of longing from him. Part of it is because we only get Nate’s POV and also, it’s because Dreo isn’t a man who willingly shares his feelings with many people. Nate is one of the trusted few.

Another great thing about this book is Calmes’s dialogue. I was smiling from ear to ear at some of the jokes she cracks. I love Nate’s ex wife and her husband. Nate’s TA is also a great character. I just find all her characters to be so endearing. You can’t help but fall in love with everyone!

One great tidbit for readers is that Nate’s ex, Duncan Stiel is from the A Matter of Time series. Duncan gets his own book in PARTING SHOT, Mary’s latest release. Reading the books so close to one another really made me appreciate the connections between books. I just adore it when authors do that for their fans.

    Wow

Super cute and hot! The cute is the relationships between the main characters and people in their life.

Nate was such a good guy (and yes, sometimes a little too good) and so innocent and honest that at times I had to remind myself that he was a 45 year old man. His personality was so youthful and vibrant that he seemed younger.

Dreo, on the other hand, was forceful and dominant. He grew up in a tougher world and his job required him to be hard, so it was easy to see him as a very mature younger man. The age difference was easy to look past and accept.

The extra people in their lives (Michael, Melissa, Ben, Jarred, co-workers and friends) all added lightheartedness to the story. The dialogue was funny, sweet, and quick. The interactions were cute and heartwarming.

As for the passion, whoa, hot! As long as it took for Dreo to make a move on Nate and for Nate to finally see Dreo as a hot, gay man, once they started, it was off the charts hot. Nate needed someone to be the stronger dominant one in bed and Dreo was perfect for him. The way Dreo absolutely adored Nate and didn't hesitate to show him and everyone else how he felt was super romantic.

Overall, excellent. While there was some drama and sadness, it felt so lighthearted that it was a fast read. This was my first Mary Calmes book and if this is a preview of others, I will be buying many more to come! I have already re-read this book three times and will likely be reading it again. 490 pgs

Exceptionally gifted writers are very hard to come by, but Ms. C

Exceptionally gifted writers are very hard to come by, but Ms. Calmes is by any measure one of them. She pens amazing dialogue that is neither predictable nor shallow -- always very fresh and very real, and she has the knack for bringing her (all fascinating) characters to life in a completely effortless fashion. To top it all off, the storyline is fresh, intricate enough to be interesting all the way through, and moves forward with really good pace. My favorite M/M romance to this date was "Zero at the Bone." Now I'm not so sure.

    Great read

This is the first book by this author for me and it will definitely not be the last! I thought it was really well written, flowed nicely, interesting drama and story, had great character development (for the MC's and secondary characters), romance and hot, hot sex. It really had everything for a very entertaining and enjoyable read.

    Highly recommended A timeless read.

The cover first drew me. Then with what inspired Mary to write the book. A simple dedication, to Steve Walker... Mary Calmes did him justice with a well-written book. His art is timeless just as her book. I truly did not want to put the book down. Mary Calmes, added special warmth that fit in with her style, beginning with the characters flow that left me in Awwww. Then OMG the chemistry between the two is HOT! And believe me it to me a minute to "Figure It Out” but when I did Awahhh. Just WOO HOO fabulous!
