In the spirit of Che Guevara's The Motorcycle Diaries, Shepherd's travel journal deserves a much wider audience. While perhaps not of the sweeping brilliance of Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America, the placing of British and American cultural and linguistic iconography into juxtaposition at the close of the Great War is a history lesson in and of itself. There is a richness and candid humor in how this ex-British soldier turned voyager relates traversing the vast North American continent, and his many experiences with those 'Yanks'. Anyone interested in what it was like to tour via two-wheels a hundred years ago, or who simply has an interest in what Americans were like back then should read Across America by Motor-cycle.

Today's roads and motorcyles. I really enjoyed the trials and adventures of Shepard. And it has some light hearted moments as well. Epub formatting was a bit off on my devices, at times, but I didn't let it keep me from the ride.

Everyone who has ever written a transportation travelog borrows from ck Shepherd, whether they realize it or not. If you are a serious motorcycle traveler or want a 'ground view' of america in 1920, then You have got to read this book.

this book was written in the style of 1910-1925 where men were expected to be hardy and up to any challenge using only brawn and their own wits.
