Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Bruce E Jarrell, MD (University of Maryland School of Medicine)
Description: This second edition of a surgery title arrives with a new editorial board and comes in three formats (CD-ROM, online, and textbook). The online updates carry CME credits and are updated at the server level.
Purpose: Description of the complete care of the surgical patient from diagnosis to treatment is provided.
Audience: Practicing surgeons or residents with educational needs in the current practice of surgery are the intended audience.
Features: This book is composed of six major sections, with a total of 97 separate chapters. The major sections include basic surgical principles, breast and soft tissue, alimentary tract, vascular system, trauma and critical care. There are two additional sections in the online version — one committed to elements of contemporary practice and one on care in special situations. The contemporary practice section discusses patient safety, outpatient surgery infection control, etc. Special situations include elderly, pediatric, and pregnant patients. This book has many line drawings and continues to have algorithms as seen in the first edition. Basic science concepts and new theories on the diagnosis and treatment of disease are also included. Over 40 percent of the content has been updated to represent new surgical standards. The book is organized in a surgical procedure-oriented method for the various topics.
Assessment: This is a very practical book that covers both techniques to perform the surgery, as well as the thinking that goes into deciding, preparing, and caring for the patient after the surgery. It covers a broad spectrum of clinical surgical problems and provides the continuum of management decisions. Particularly noteworthy is the description of intra-operative technique. The steps in an operation can be followed very clearly in parallel with the thinking of the surgeon. The line drawings are in color and excellent. The photographs and radiographs are of a high quality and are appropriate. I found this to be a very practical book. It gives an excellent view to the practicing surgeon of current surgical thinking. Furthermore, the recent advances in surgery are highlighted, which accomplishes the stated goal of the authors to create an intuitive body system approach to surgery. More importantly, I think the second edition is a significant improvement over the first edition. This edition is much more readable, comprehensive and will be much more useful to the surgeon.
