Description: This graduate level book uses a unique integrated systems physiology approach to present advanced exercise physiology topics.
Purpose: Although there are numerous undergraduate exercise physiology texts available, there are few graduate level texts and none organize the material in this manner; thus this book fills this void nicely.
Audience: Most of the contributors are well-known experts in their respective subdisciplines of exercise physiology. This results in chapters that have great depth written at a high level of cognition. The target audience is graduate students and professionals in the field.
Features: The focus of the vast majority of the book is on the various biological systems and the effects of exercise on these systems with additional chapters devoted to the physiological responses to exercising in extreme environments, genetics, and a historical perspective of exercise physiology. The strength of this book is the unique manner in which the material is presented and the depth of the physiological content in each chapter. However, this depth comes at the expense of providing sufficient assessment and clinical information. Also, excesses in some content areas result in omissions in other areas. For example, the historical chapter provides tremendous detail on the ancient history of exercise physiology, but the many advances and achievements that have occurred in this field since the 20th century are not included. Additionally, topics (e.g., exercise and aging, gender differences, and body composition) that do not fit neatly into this integrated systems physiology approach, but are routinely included in other exercise physiology texts, are noticeably absent from this one.
Assessment: Despite some limitations, this book is organized in a unique manner and is rich in physiology content. It should be given consideration as a text for graduate exercise physiology courses, and it would be a welcome addition to the book collection of any graduate student or professional in exercise physiology.
