From The CriticsReviewer: Keith Webster, MA, ATC (University of Kentucky)
Description: The development of key market forces since the 2007 edition of this book created the need for this update of standards and guidelines for the health/fitness club industry.
Purpose: The health/fitness club industry plays a key role in the overall healthcare system and requires standards and guidelines to meet this challenge. The book addresses the involvement of NSF International, which developed a voluntary certification process, and the expanding role of government regulation of this industry. In addition, new business models require standards and guidelines for self-regulation. The book addresses these developments in a very helpful manner.
Audience: Owners and operators of health/fitness clubs are the intended audience, but members of the professional staff and independent contractors also can benefit from the standards and guidelines set out in this book. Since 1990, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has met the challenge of recommending safe practices for those who engage in physical activity.
Features: The eight chapters describe in detail the recommended standards and guidelines for health/fitness clubs to maintain a high level of care while enhancing the experience for those using these facilities. The extensive appendix section provides greater detail on the topics covered in the chapters. Sample forms to use while implementing the standards and guidelines are also provided. However, several forms have references from more than 20 years ago and could be updated. Also, the acronym for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is incorrectly listed as Health Information Protection and Portability Act (HIPPA) in the definition section and index.
Assessment: This edition provides updated information about and will be a valuable resource for owners and operators of health/fitness club facilities. The easy-to-follow format makes this book an extremely useful tool to use as these facilities strive to maintain high standards as the role of the health/fitness club industry evolves.
