Overview

We currently do not publish a book suitable for the AT portion of the Therapeutic Exercise market. This product will allow us good entry into this market. NASM's reputation and involvement with NATA should help us to make inroads into these courses.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Gary L. Oden, PhD (Sam Houston State University)
Description: This book covers a variety of chronic diseases and disabilities as well as detailed exercise interventions. The unique aspect of the book is the detail with which each topic is covered.
Purpose: Some of the authors' objectives are met. Exercise clinicians will find some aspects of this book helpful. However, after reading the goals of the authors in the preface, I am not clear as to what the primary goal is. If it is to provide practicing healthcare professionals a resource for guidance when working with chronic disease individuals, then yes, the book meets the goal. From my experience in academics and working in a hospital rehabilitation setting, I believe this book does have value.
Audience: The book is written for practitioners in clinical settings. The information will be useful for these individuals. The authors are very credible.
Features: A variety of chronic diseases and disabilities are the topic of this book. The pathophysiology, diagnosis, intervention, and education about each are discussed. Each area is well covered.
Assessment: The authors of this book are well qualified to write such a book. The content is well covered and a wide variety of disabilities are discussed. This book can be very useful for exercise clinicians working with patients suffering from one of these conditions.
From The Critics
Written for post-baccalaureate-level clinical exercise physiologists with training in the exercise sciences, this book explores the benefits and limitations of exercise testing and training in the evaluation and management of a broad spectrum of patients with chronic diseases and disabilities. Chapters cover 19 specific conditions, such as stroke, brain injury, osteoporosis, amputation, and chronic fatigue syndrome, and stress the role of the clinical exercise physiologist in working with other healthcare professionals. Contributors include professors of physical therapy, sports nutrition, physical education, rehabilitation, and occupational therapy. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
