Description: This is a comprehensive overview of personal training that also has an online component which serves as an additional resource. The first edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to personal training information and serve as a comprehensive resource for future and current personal trainers. This book can also serve as a study guide for the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer examination.
Audience: Future and current personal trainers will find the well referenced information useful. All book and section editors are researchers, professors, advanced practitioners, or successful business owners.
Features: The book is divided into six sections. Broadly, they cover an overview of personal training, education, scientific foundation, initial client consultation/screening, exercise program development, and business principles. Specific objectives precede each chapter and each chapter uses color graphs, charts, and photographs to further clarify written concepts. A reference list ends the chapter. The book does an excellent job blending research and practical knowledge. A useful appendix covering ACSM certifications and a comprehensive index end the book. Sample exercise programs, descriptions and photographs of a variety of exercises and stretches are provided. The design of the cardiorespiratory program is comprehensive, but the resistance training program design chapter lacks depth and variety. The business section does an excellent job covering business principles and legal and ethical issues. Examples of informed consent or assumption of risk documents may have been helpful.
Assessment: Personal trainers will appreciate this excellent introductory resource. The first edition of this book was a compilation of ACSM resources and this second edition is written an original publication. It is well written, of similar quality and usefulness as NSCA's Essentials of Personal Training, Earle and Baechle (Human Kinetics; 2004).
