Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
For every young person who has ever dreamed of acting on the stage or in film, this book is a comprehensive look at what it means to be a professional actor. A stage and television actor herself, Katherine Mayfield candidly offers all the truths about what it is REALLY like to try and make a living as an actor. No aspect of the craft is overlooked in this helpful guide. There is even a suggested list of thirty-five plays to be familiar with, a hint that can be followed up on immediately by the truly dedicated. Many rules to live by and explanations of such specific elements as timing and self-esteem are discussed. The reader will be informed on what to expect and also gain some insight into the largely important business side to pursuing an acting career. Certain definitions can be found adjacent to the text in each chapter. Terms such as "ad-lib" and "sense-memory" are simplified, which helps speak to people with or without much exposure to the world of acting. Many photos from stage performances are included, as well as interviews with young aspiring stars. This book relates to the dreams of the hopeful actor, and is essential for anyone curious about what it would really be like to work as a professional performer.
