Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Walter Hogan
This adult-market handbook for beginning actors will be eye opening for secondary school students with a serious interest in drama because it provides a very clear and detailed picture of the hard work and intense dedication required of actors. Written by a pair of veteran professional acting instructors, the text is developed from workshops conducted by the authors with participants of the Paul Gleason Theatre in Hollywood. Both practical and inspirational, the book is built around dozens of vocal, dramatic, and mental exercises aimed at developing and honing acting skills. The fifteen chapters cover such topics and situations as "The Audience," "Sound and Vocal Levels," and "Auditioning." Each chapter is divided into several sections, including actual exercises, explanations of the purpose and benefits of the exercises, and broader reflections on the profession of acting and the life habits that assist dedicated actors in maintaining their focus. Many samples of authentic workshop dialogue between drama students and their coaches are presented, lending a highly personal and realistic flavor to the discussion. As the authors note in their introduction, some of the material is best presented in person and difficult to bring to life on the printed page. The book's small, sans serif font and varying rhetorical stances are only minor distractions since it is not intended to be read from cover to cover. The authors are real professionals who live and breathe their craft, and they provide an intense immersion into the practice and profession of acting. Reviewer: Walter Hogan
