Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Graphic adaptations of the Judeo-Christian bible are a hot trend, from R. Crumb to Rob Liefeld. This treatment proclaims "God is the original action hero" and presents more than 200 Bible tales in comics form. An "action-movie" treatment of the Old and New Testament should have real potential, but it's not realized here. There are a few stunning moments, but they're more weirdness than spectacle: Adam lamenting that--after eating the forbidden fruit--he's not wise, just naked; Cain reflecting that he hates sheep. For the most part, artist Cariello has taken a Classics Illustrated approach, with just the highlights recounted in episodic form. A lack of emotion in the art is a particular weakness given the drama inherent in the source material. But the most disappointing aspect of both the art and the story is their lack of epic scope. However, the book does give the faithful a graphic interpretation of more obscure Bible tales. Ages 8–up. (Sept.)

Meet the Author

Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil.  At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist.  And so did everyone else--he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach.  He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.

Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics.  He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.

In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook's classic Picture Bible.  What David C. Cook couldn't know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible.  He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!

CHAPTER 1

In the Beginning

THERE WAS NOTHING.

EXCEPT GOD.

Day 2

THEN GOD SEPARATED THE WATERS OF THE NOTHINGNESS INTO THE MOISTURE AND CLOUDS OF THE SKY ABOVE, AND THE DROPS AND WAVES OF THE OCEAN BELOW. GOD NAMED THE SKY "HEAVENS."

Day 3

GOD NAMED THE LOWER WATERS THE "SEA." HE GATHERED TOGETHER THE WATERS OF THE SEA, EXPOSING DRY GROUND. HE NAMED THE DRY LAND "EARTH." ON THIS LAND, HE MADE GRASS AND FLOWERS AND TREES. HE MADE THEM WITH SEEDS SO THEY COULD GROW MORE GRASS AND FLOWERS AND TREES. THE FRUITFUL EARTH WAS A PLACE OF BEAUTY.

AND GOD KNEW THAT IT WAS GOOD.

Day 4

THEN GOD FASHIONED THE SUN, THE MOON, AND THE STARS TO LIGHT THE EARTH. AND HE SET THEM IN THE HEAVENS TO MARK THE DAYS, SEASONS AND YEARS.

Day 5

GOD SAID, "LET THE WATER BE FILLED WITH LIVING CREATURES!" AND THE SEAS AND RIVERS SWARMED WITH WHALES AND FISH.

GOD SAID, "LET BIRDS FLY THROUGH THE SKY." AND THE OPEN SKY ABOVE THE EARTH WAS FILLED WITH EVERY KIND OF FLYING BIRD.

"BE FRUITFUL AND FILL THE EARTH," GOD SAID AS HE BLESSED THE LIVING CREATURES OF THE SEA AND SKY.

AND GOD KNEW THAT IT WAS GOOD.

    I Also Recommend:

    Excellent Bible Comic!

Sergio Cariello's wonderful art brings the events of the Bible to life in this fantastic book. Written for even younger children to be able to understand the story, the illustrations are gripping enough to hold even adults attention. The index detailing which Bible verses are represented on each page make it a great tool to use alongside your Bible to help children (and even adults) better understand God's word. Highly recommended.

AWESOME!!! I've never seen such a beautiful portrayal of contradictions IN MY LIFE!! I particularly enjoyed all the rape scenes!! The Bronze Age ideals and view of the world practically popped off the page and instantly made me ignorant, just the way Jesus intended!! Great book for anyone who hates thinking!!

Incest, rape, baby killing, impaling, slavery, genocide, mass murder, trolling, despair, and animal sacrifice, this book has it all. If sadism is your game, then buy this book. Never before has a book contained so much death and destruction. The greatest work of fiction ever.

    Awesome for kids!

We got this for our 8yo son for Christmas. He reads it whenever he can, and he's read it front to back at least 15 times since then. It is currently missing, and we really missed it at church today. We're seriously considering buying another copy and chalking the lost one up to gone for good to someone else who needed it more than we did. This book is worth every penny and then some. He now knows most of the Bible stories by heart, and it was helpful that it is in chronological order because it makes much more sense to kids this age.

WOW is what comes to my mind. This Bible may be for the children but I tell you I really enjoyed it so very much that I will grab it off my desk again and read it. I have a lot of books I go back to that keeps my mind fresh and remember some things. I really enjoyed the pictures he drew just as much as the Bible it's self. I also enjoyed the story behind Mr. Cariello. You will too.

I love the cover but I really wanted to read it because I get lost a lot of times in my other Bibles. This Bible brought a fresh look at God and our world and what happened in it, all the way through to Revelations. I love, love this Bible, yes ok I know it's for kids but hey I am a big kid and at my age I can get by with being a big kid. I just love the way it's written and I feel it will get them little ones interested in our Lord. Hats off to Sergio Cariello.

When I received this Bible in the mail I was like a kid that got a brand new bike. You will to be too, I am sure of it. I think your kids will be so interested you may not have to tell them to be quite they may ask for this Bible time and time again to look at.

The Bible is hard to read and understand I know I think that is why my interest faded, not my interest in God just trying to figure out what the Bible was trying to tell me with words I could hardly read so how could I understand it?

This Bible made me look at God and the people in it a whole new way. It kept my interest and the pictures were unique. I also think learning the Bible is very important and this Bible is a good starter for the young ones or even great for us older folks. The pictures are so unique that they will bring the people to life for the little ones as you read it to them.

Remember how children look at Superman, Thor, Caption America, Well isn't God a HERO too in his own right?? Maybe if the kids see this Bible God will hit #1 and kick the fairy tale heroes out of #1 spot. Other heroes in the Bibles are Samson, Esther, and what about Moses? Just think of all the heroes in the Bible, bet you were like me and never thought of them as Heroes well you will after you read this Bible and see the beautiful pictures that goes along with the stories in the Bible. This Bible is very fascinating.

Get ready for a wonderful new  the Bible for the young and the young at heart. Have fun and enjoy the beautiful pictures.  I recommend it highly!! So go grab it and get started.

    HAPPY READING!!!!!!!!!!

I really had a hard time putting it down, read it to my dogs and they seem to like it too :) I really had it done and my rough draft wrote long before I got a chance to type it out on the computer because I had stitches put in my left hand and leg do to my dogs fighting and me being stupid don't get in the middle of your dog find a blow horn. So it took me awhile to write my review I had to do it one handed.

I recommend this book for kids!

I gave the Action Bible to my grandson for Christmas and he hasn't stopped reading it yet. He said he didn't know the Bible had so much action! He is 9 years old and loves video games and Legos but he reads this book everyday. That says a lot. The illustrator is gifted to be able to draw a little boy into the Bible like he has drawn my grandson. I recommended it to my girlfriend and she got one for her grandson as well. I highly recommend the Action Bible!

Great for the not so great reader!

I bought this Bible for my 8yr. old son. He has been reading it all weekend... I can barely get him to read anything. The pictures really pull him in, but it is not soft served like most picture bibles. It reads more like an adult translation just in word bubbles. Great for ages 7-adult.

    NOT just for the kids!

My wife and I got this for our 8-year old for Chistmas and we ALL enjoy reading a chapter or two of the "A-B" every night at bedtime. Not only have mommy and I learned about people and places we didn't know before, but we all take turns reading the different characters. It's great fun and brings the Bible to life.

    Very Good

A very concise appealing format. Not your typical bunnies and rainbows format. Gets older kids interested in the Bible. Opens the door for meaningful dicussion. Jesus is not illustrated as a victim, but as a conqueror; which He is. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it overstepped boundries into a particular agenda/interpretation in the preface of Revelation.
