School Library Journal
YA-- In informal language that addresses readers as ``you,'' the author discusses the history of this sport, the gear required, the surface necessary, and numerous stunts. Special attention is given to the importance of safety. Yellow tips next to many of the tricks point out special considerations and technique hints. Clear, full-color, stop-action photographs draw browsers in. Their creative placement (diagonally, or as steps, or with special edges to look like negatives) heightens interest. Directions are included for making a simple halfpipe and miniramp.

Through colorful action photos, this little manual conveys the thrills of skateboarding without the reader's ever having to see pavement or board. Packed with information, the book sketches a history, gives an overview of equipment, and defines different styles and terrains of skateboarding. Most of the book consists of tricks and maneuvers pictured and identified by name, with tips given so that the learner can avoid common mistakes. The authors pay only lip service to protective gear--only the photos of the most experienced skateboarders doing the most dangerous stunts show full gear. At least half of the photos show young men in just T-shirts, shorts, and caps flying through the air, defying gravity; no females are pictured. The authors include a glossary for the uninitiated.
