Reviewer: Martha J. Greenberg, PhD, RN (Pace University)
Description: This is a down-to-earth, practical guide to using acupuncture during preconception, pregnancy, labor, and postpartum periods. Offered is a unique and interesting blend of Eastern and Western philosophies, knowledge, and treatment guidelines for pregnancy and childbirth.
Purpose: The author's goals emphasize practicality, and the text is aimed at assisting clinicians in the use of acupuncture, Therefore, the text is presented in step-by-step guidelines.
Audience: This is an essential text for any acupuncturists who treat expectant women. The author has 15 years experience as a midwife acupuncturist, practicing in Britain's National Health Service.
Features: This readable resource focuses on preconception, pregnancy through labor, high-risk pregnancies and labors, and postpartum. Nutritional guidelines are presented, and Eastern and Western beliefs and practices are integrated throughout. The text would benefit from references that are more up to date. Color plates might add to its visual appeal.
Assessment: This book, the first of its kind in English, is essential for any acupuncturist treating childbearing women. Rigorous and detailed guidelines for the use of acupuncture in childbirth are blended with contemporary Western obstetrical practices.

From the Publisher
"One of the joys of this book is Zita’s ability to combine knowledge of the traditional western approach, essential for the confidence of those non-midwife acupuncturists, with the traditional eastern knowledge, essential for all practitioners, to produce a detailed ‘how to’ book. However, I would also recommend this book to midwives and student midwives in general. The terminology used in TCM is wonderfully evocative (the uterus is known as the ‘envelope of Yin’, and improving postnatal wellbeing may involve ‘mother roasting’), yet also so alien sounding that many may dismiss this book as being of specialist interest only. Please don’t! There is so much knowledge, and understanding of the underlying principle of holistic care, and the fundamental importance of all aspects of a mother’s wellbeing before, during and after pregnancy, that it would be unfortunate if this book became purely a specialist tome."
