Thomas L. McKiernan
One of the more common topics in the current medical literature is that of acute coronary syndromes. Unstable angina syndromes and all types of myocardial infarction have been linked together as a spectrum of disease. This text is an up-to-date review of the dramatic research that has defined this spectrum during the late 1990s. Edited by a respected researcher and expert in this field, the work seeks to ""capture the essence of the latest developments in pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes."" In this regard, it is a highly successful manuscript. The editor has brought together the world's experts to review the rapidly developing knowledge in this area in an evidenced-based fashion. Directed at the front line clinical cardiologist and interventionalist, this text would also be beneficial to all internists, family practitioners, residents, and nurses who regularly treat these acute coronary syndromes. The book begins with a nice review of essential vascular biology and includes findings seen with endovascular coronary ultrasound as well. The illustrations are ample and pertinent but suffer from lack of color. Perhaps the best part of the text is its exhaustive review of thrombolysis, past and present, and its look at antithrombin therapy. The editor's chapter on advances in antiplatelet therapy is the best in the text and perhaps the most relevant on this topic. He also reviews lessons from the important GUSTO trials and third generation thrombolytic agents. This state-of-the-art review is exhaustively referenced and, in a nice touch, the index lists study acronyms separately. This is a must have reference for the clinicalcardiologist and interventionalist, but would well serve the researcher in this area as well as any healthcare provider who cares for acute coronary syndromes.
