Purpose: The purpose is to supplement practitioners' clinical experience and refresh their memory.
Audience: Although the book targets British general practitioners, the discussions are relevant for all who practice medicine. The authors have given us a very personal, back-to-basics book with lessons for all.
Features: The book summarizes the basic science, history, and physical, then discusses the cases. The author presents a nice discussion of these common outpatient scenarios and challenges readers to answer questions on how to approach the patient, the social context in which the patient presents, decisions on when to admit to an inpatient facility and the long-term follow-up. These are followed by options and references for further reading. Not much physiology is explained, nor is much rationale given for the answers, but the book does stimulate thinking.
Assessment: This thoughtful book for general practitioners has many reminders of how to approach patients on an everyday basis.
