Addicted to Bass: Winter 2009

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier
Released on account of the popularity of its predecessor earlier in the year, Addicted to Bass: Winter 2009 is another triple-disc collection of bass-heavy tracks in the recently revived Ministry of Sound series. The styles here range from bassline and drum'n'bass to garage and breaks. Bass is the common denominator of all 60 tracks, which are divided up evenly with 20 on each disc. As on the previous Addicted to Bass volume, the Wideboys are credited with mixing the selections and their effort is lamentable. Once again, the tracks are cross-faded into one another in a routine manner. Anyone acquainted with recent Ministry of Sound releases will be accustomed to ...

Anyone acquainted with recent Ministry of Sound releases will be accustomed to cross-faded mixes like this. It's an unfortunate quality of these albums. On a positive note, Addicted to Bass: Winter 2009 is filled to the brim with music, including a lot of standout tracks. There are some well-known selections like the Prodigy's "Warrior's Dance," Basement Jaxx's "Raindrops," and Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden's "Bonkers." They're all front-loaded and what follows is steadily less familiar. Consequently, Addicted to Bass: Winter 2009 is a good place to discover new music and new styles of bass music. Besides some duds interspersed here and there over the course of the 60 tracks, the only strike against Addicted to Bass is the Wideboys' routine mix. Anyone with a sharp ear for actual DJ mixing might prefer to download an unmixed MP3 version of Addicted to Bass: Winter 2009 opposed to the triple-disc CD package.
