Alan A. Cavaiola, PhD, LPC, LCADC, is a full Professor and a member of the Graduate Faculty at Monmouth University (West Long Branch, NJ) where he serves as Director of the Addiction Studies program.

Amanda Giordano, PhD, LPC, is an associate professor of counseling at the University of Georgia.

Nedeljko Golubovic, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling & Marital and Family Therapy at the University of San Diego. Dr. Golubovic also serves as a Program Director for the Opioid Workforce Expansion Program funded by the Health Resource and Service Administration.

Purpose: According to the back cover, "grounded in leading-edge evidence-based research, this hands-on text applies a step-by-step approach to addiction counseling. This book encompasses assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning; case management; and relapse prevention, with an incisive focus on behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders." Those are very worthy objectives. Presenting the material in print and online format adds value, enhancing portability and searchability. The book and website meet the stated objectives.
Audience: According to information on the back cover, "this essential resource will be valued as a primary textbook for any course that focuses on addiction counseling and treatment." I agree with the target audience described above but would add that clinicians in the field of addictions/dual diagnosis will benefit as well. The book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter of the book with experience in addiction and trauma.
Features: The book begins with an introduction to the topic. There is a high prevalence of substance use disorders in the United States. Thus, students need to be competent in addiction counseling to address these issues. The book presents different theoretical models of etiology, with the three main categories being biological, psychological, and social/sociocultural. The therapeutic process begins with assessment, utilizing structured interviews, various measures, and drug screening. Group counseling is common in many settings due to the high numbers of patients needing treatment. Motivational interviewing is often used to help address the change process. It is important to also deal with relapse prevention so that gains can be maintained. Clients often are diagnosed with a substance use disorder as well as another psychological disorder such as anxiety or depression. Cultural factors must be considered when designing treatment options. It is important for mental health professionals to advocate for their clients. This could be in terms of federal/state legislation and/or different community supports. The book is very readable and contains tables, boxes, and appendixes, which help clarify the text. The chapters are organized in a uniform manner, with the following sections: introduction, text, notes from the field, summary, resources, and key references. Many of the chapters include case examples. There are no obvious shortcomings.
Assessment: This book is excellent because it contains various aspects of addiction counseling, which will help students become competent in the field. It explores theory, assessment/diagnosis, intervention, and advocacy. The case examples are wonderful, showing how theory is applied in actual cases. Online access to the content increases accessibility and searchability and offers excellent instructor resources.
