ADDICTION: Why They Use (A Handbook for Anyone who Loves an Alcoholic or Addict.)
If you have an alcoholic or addict in your life you need this book. If you know a family struggling with addiction, they need this book. It will bring clarity and relief. It will answer many of the questions that torment you.
It will give you direction and HOPE!

Addiction is perhaps one of the most emotionally painful issues we can observe in someone we love. Because of the complex emotional nature of the problem it is without question one of the most confusing human health issues we have ever faced as a society. Addiction often leaves loved ones tortured with guilt, full of fear, emotionally and mentally exhausted.

Many crucial questions have remained unanswered for too long. “Addiction: Why They Use,” bridges the gaps for loved ones in very simplified and understandable terms. No more are the loved ones of alcoholics and addicts left feeling that immeasurable loneliness, sadness and confusion. This book has been written exclusively for you, the family members and loved ones of the alcoholic or addicted. This book will address your issues and give you answers to questions that we have all struggled with for years.

Have you ever asked any of the following questions?
What is addiction?
Why won’t they just stop?
Why don’t you stop?
Can’t you see what it’s doing to you?
Why can’t s/he stop for the children?
Don’t you care?
Why do you drink so much?
Can’t you have just one?
Is our relationship not worth it to you?
It’s the booze or us; what’s it going to be?
What should I do?
What is Enabling?
If so then this book was specifically written with you in mind. During the past 25 years of working with families of addiction I have uncovered many simple, practical, necessary and beneficial answers to the question you have. I decided to write this book because I realized that while there are thousands of treatment programs for the addicted there is little help for you.

This book will ease your anguish and resolve most of the confusion you have about the behavior of an alcoholic or addict that you work with, love or care about. It will undoubtedly expand your knowledge of this multifaceted and complex topic. You are not alone in your struggle but the path is not easy. You may have to make very difficult decisions but I believe that understanding “Why They Use” will make those choices clearer.

    Waste of time

This book was a very lightweight summary of the hisory and theories arround addiction causes and treatments. The introduction promises insight into "why they use", but didn't deliver. Save yourself some time and go to an ALANON meeting. That is what the book finally recommends in the last chapter.
