Overview

A revolutionary and empowering paradigm in treating addiction based on groundbreaking new science.

For decades addiction has been viewed and treated as a social and behavioral illness, afflicting people of “weak” character and “bad” moral fiber. However, recent breakthroughs in genetic technology have enabled doctors, for the first time, to correctly diagnose the disease and prove that addiction is an inherited, neuro-chemical disease originating in brain chemistry, determined by genetics, and triggered by stress.

In their groundbreaking The Addiction Solution, David Kipper, MD, and Steven Whitney distill these exciting findings into a guide for the millions of adults who want to be free from the cycle of addiction, and for their loved ones who want to better understand it and to help. It draws on composite case histories to illustrate how the innovative Personal Recovery Program works by customizing treatment for a diverse group of addicts abusing a wide variety of different substances—from the first day of treatment to its successful resolution. The result is a complete guide to a world made brand-new by this enormous paradigm shift in the treatment of addiction.

    Nurse Approved

The Addiction Solution is compassionate, cutting-edge, backed by science AND it is a great read! In Part Three: Case Studies Dr. Kipper and Steve Whitney invite all of us to "go ahead---put on an imaginary white coat. Observe each of these "patients" and.look for early clues that lead to our diagnosis and successful treatment." Then the authors lead you on a fascinating medical journey into the lives and treatment of several addict profiles. The diagrams and Kipper's practical, down-to-earth voice easily convey the role brain chemistry and neurotransmitters play in addiction. My favorite part of all is Your Addiction Prediction. Every one should take this simple test to find out which neurotransmitter is most likely out of balance based on your (or your patient's) symptoms and family history. The Addiction Solution is chock full of interesting stories and useful information. In the Ask A Doctor sidebars Dr. Kipper answers intriguing questions like: Why does a lottery winner become an addict after winning a million dollars? And Do dietary and holistic approaches to addiction actually work? I'm a registered nurse and I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from addiction and for all health care providers, friends and family members who want to help someone beat this disease.

    A must read

Dr. Kipper and Steven Whitney have gone far beyond the usual 'treatments' for addition by exposing the factors that lead to the additions. The genetic make-up of the individual and how through inovative treatments the addict can understand and achive success in their sobriety, and the tools in which to do it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered or is suffering from the darkness of addition.
