Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Chabin
This is a fine book for use in the schools. It integrates extremely simple concepts from arithmetic with an equally simple vocabulary as part of reading instruction. The illustrations are the best part. They are simple and friendly and comfortable. In fact, the frog has so much character I was disappointed that he (or is it a she) was not the narrator. Unfortunately not. Instead the story is told with a very teacherly voice that says things like "I see 2 more ducks. There are 4 ducks now." Of course, no one talks like that. No one would want to. There really is not anything wrong with the stilted prose of school books. After all, we were all introduced to both math and reading this way. Actually, we were not introduced to reading this way. What hooks readers on reading are books like The Cat and the Hat with its rollicking, off beat verse and slightly scary premise, or Jon Muth's Stone Soup with its exquisite art and clear moral lesson. The math that we got was like this, though: simple, methodical, predictable, and utterly humorless. Maybe that is why so many of us read with an enthusiasm so few of us feel for math.
