Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
What happens when Rachel and Kristy have a sleep over and discover a tiny fairy crying in the bedroom? Is this another of the girls’ adventures with fairies? They come to the conclusion that Jack Frost must have planned a joke to turn April Fool’s Day into a bad (and not fun) day. It is up to the girls to spread the word to their classmates to keep the day as it ought to be. Readers will enjoy reading the description of the tricks they have to undo, and their search for fairy magic objects to help them. In school there is more mischief being created in the classrooms and good jokes must be substituted to try on their friends to make them laugh. Changes in the clock time, milk cartons which have odd holes, and goblins in the cafeteria create plenty of trouble to try to untangle. The girls work it all out with Addison, as a fairy helper, and smiles soon return to the celebration of April Fool’s Day. The book highlights searches for magic in many of the short stories Meadows includes. Small black and white drawings are also sprinkled among the pages. The book is one of a long list of the very popular “Rainbow Magic” series. Designed for second and third grade readers, this Special Edition is longer than the individual books usually are, and offers some interesting things to do. Most readers of the series cannot wait to read each new book over and over again. When young readers finish each book they may believe in fairy magic and begin planning some funny jokes and tricks to try next April Fool’s Day. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 7 to 10.
