A lesson in spotting a fake "friend" is learned here. Vivid and vibrant descriptions of the life of a slave make these stories "real" for the reader; allows the reader to "feel" the emotions of the protagonist, Addy. Beautiful color illustrations with attention to detail and the storyline will attract the young reader's attention. The first book in the Addy series deals with slavery, the second book deals with true friendship and the third one deals with the first Christmas in a new state. Here is an important statement from book number three, "You found out what freedom was about," Reverend Drake said. "It wasn't free!" At the end of each book is a section titled "Looking Back" and it offers a history lesson about the times in which Addy lived also this section gives some vocabulary that should expand the reader's list of vocabulary words. There are words such as abolitionist, slavery, Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, and several other words or groups of events that are described. These first three books will leave the reader wanting to read the rest of the series.
