Overview

At some time or another, most of us have trouble concentrating on an assignment, sitting still in class, or waiting our turn. When these troublesome behaviors interfere with our ability to lead a normal life, it could be a sign of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). An estimated one to three million children in the United States live in the shadow of ADHD, coping with mild to severe behavioral problems. Trudi Strain Trueit examines the controversy surrounding ADHD, as well as the symptoms, possible causes, and methods of treatment. Also, people who have ADHD tell their stories and discuss the positive steps they took in coping with the disorder so that they could succeed in life.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Andrews emphasizes that meditation is not a flaky practice, or a particularly religious one, but one that's designed to reduce stress and help individuals manage their lives. Four chapters explain the why and how of meditating. Questionnaires dealing with self-awareness and feeling overwhelmed are inserted into the text. Two drawings-one of a full lotus, the other of a half lotus, are included. Landau defines dyslexia as a "learning difference," not a "learning disability." In four clearly written chapters, she describes the condition and suggests methods for managing it. There is no "cure," nor does one outgrow it. The book offers solid, basic information; there are no illustrations. Trueit explains ADHD well, also addressing the issue of overdiagnosis. Illustrations show the brain and neurotransmitters. Three books that offer solid, easy-to-understand information, without flashy designs.-Linda Beck, Indian Valley Public Library, Telford, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
