Ralph Kylloe explores the classic style and detailing of Adirondack home design from both a historic and contemporary perspective. He shows us traditional style as well as contemporary interpretations of home design and d├ęcor in the style that made "great camps" an icon of vacation living and outdoor relaxation.

Through personal tours of a ten Adirondack-style homes, from boat houses overhanging the lake, to riverside cabins, camps in the pines, and even the grandest of historic great camps-Top Ridge, Kylloe gives a sound if abbreviated history of New York's Adirondacks. From prehistory through the advent of wilderness recreation and outdoor living, the lifestyle that brought generations of vacationers to the lakes and mountains of upstate New York has much more influence today than as geographic region. Adirondack has become an enduring style, rich with furnishings handcrafted from indigenous materials. Birch bark veneer on bureaus, chests of drawers, lampshades, mirror frames, and more is the most readily identified icon of Adirondack style. The application of twigs in geometric or mosaic patterns is emulated all over the country.

For cabin or camp, vacation house or permanent residence, the spirit of the Adirondacks is the epitome of mountain living. Ralph Kylloe's love for the region informs his brilliant photography and pithy commentary.

Read an Excerpt

I got lost for quite some time trying to find the place. I hadn't been there in two decades. The roads are long and winding. The landmarks are few. No signs to guide you are visible. Turn left at the dirt road and stop when it dead ends.

I had photographed Top Ridge in the mid- 1980s and presented several of the photos in my book Rustic Traditions. At the time I first photographed the camp, it had stood unchanged for some sixty years. Filled with unique rustic objects of art indicative of a sophisticated and advanced collector, the home was a marvel of architectural wonder and "folky" passion. Frankly, I loved the place. The state of New York owned the camp for a while. A decade later the camp was sold to a private party. One of the Adirondack's greatest treasures, this camp was remodeled and expanded by the present owners, who also added their personal touches. Filled with mystique and lore, Top Ridge is perhaps the best known of all the Adirondack great camps. But it is privately owned and not open to the public.

If Ever You Dreamed Of Living In The Adirondacks:

perhaps on a lake, in a cozy cabin or camp, then this is the book for you!! Kylloe has outdone himself again. Not only are the photos depicting of a place some of us can only dream about, but no one better educates the reader than Ralph on the true history of the great camps in the adirondack mountains. Beautiful photography of cozy rustic homes and camps inside and out, that not only give the reader a sense of what it must be like to live the dream, but with accuracy . He is not only a resident of such a grand place but is highly educated in every facet of what the word 'rustic' truely means, from antique furniture to history of the region, the decorating style it depicts and so much more. A true feast for any thirsty eyed person who craves a little 'comfort food' for not only the mind but the soul and heart as well. I own all his books and to me they just get better and better.
