This book was invaluable in getting me up to speed on InDesign. Anyone who has used an Adobe product knows that all Creative Suite applications are created in the same likeness so one could get up to speed quickly without having to learn a different program and it's motions. With that in mind, I was able to understand the tools and the panels concept due to previous experience with Dreamweaver and Photoshop but to get a project off the ground with InDesign, I would be completely in the dark. Once I put this book in-between my hands it was a whole new ball game.
The book mentions how one could read cover to cover or jump around, I personally read cover to cover learning all the uses for the tools, panels, workflows and shortcuts inside the program. The beginning of the book covers using the tools in the program as listed below.
- Chapter 1 was your standard chapter to get started with the tools, panels, opening/saving/closing a document and working with windows
- Chapter 2 stated the process of creating and viewing your document using guides, rulers, and grids...don't want anything crooked now
- Chapter 3 went into managing pages and books. It's really useful if you need to work with page numbers and sections and creating and managing books
- Chapter 3 was about dealing with text from kerning, leading, tracking, scaling and much more
- Chapter 5 dealt with importing, placing, and working with graphics
- Chapter 6 delved deeper into the graphics element by dealing with objects and layers and how to resize, move, duplicating, scale, rotate, repeating and transforming.
- Chapter 7 was about applying and managing color by talking about settings, profiles and working with different modes...think CMYK, RGB or Lab
- Chapter 8 was about applying fills, strokes and effects such as blends, shadows, and glows among others
- Chapter 9 goes into points and paths
- Chapter 10 covered tables and importing text into tables along with adjusting elements of that table
- Chapter 11 goes into styles such as paragraph and character styles
Now when you hit chapter 12 and up your getting into the workflows that you would use on a daily basis in the field such as:
- Chapter 12 deals with finalizing a document...you have to finish it eventually right.
- Chapter 13 & 14 go into creating an interactive document and creating a digital publication...think ipad, iphone, kindle, and the like
- Chapter 15 shows you how you can automate your workflow....think less is more when it comes to what you have to actually do
- Chapter 16 & 17 explain the exporting of a document, printing and outputting of documents
- Chapter 18 show how you can customize InDesign to the way you work by changing some of the programs preferences
- Chapter 19 covered a bit on InCopy which allows you to share documents among others and add comments, corrections and notes.
- Chapter 20 There was mention of Adobe Bridge, Adobe Media Encoder, the ExtendScript toolkit, Camera Raw and working with RAW Images.
The book covered creating a digital publication for various tablets, covered templates for print, material for the web and liquid layouts if you are using a project on multiple mobile devices. There is also mention of the Adobe certified exams. Another great thing which I really loved was that it show you the new features in the program from the previous version. This book wasn't a typical tech book in the sense of dry content like some others I have read in the past. This book offered color pictures and short procedures to get an action done, within 8 steps you had an understand of how a tool worked, text accentuated, color blooming, menus, and submenus. I didn't have the opportunity to try the bonus online content but this book alone got me up and running without wasting my time. I recommend it to anyone that is starting out or already has familiarity with the program. My copy is within reach of my desk since I found it so useful and informative.

I would not recommend this book. The chapters do go into detail and there are lesson files, however, there isn't anything referencing what file to to open and work on for a lesson. I will be having to spend more money finding another book that is a better learning tool! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
