As I was taking classes in Photoshop, I found that the textbooks that were used were very fragmented, unorganized, and vague. Very few practices or labs were included. Often I was told what to do, but very little explanation was given on the theory behind it and how I could use the skill in practical situations. Now I am an instructor myself, and I have been using materials from a variety of books. Finally there is a text that assumes we are smart enough to be able to sink our teeth into Photoshop and really get to know the theory behind what we are doing. Each chapter is broken down into lessons that are well written and interesting. Found on the CD-ROM are numerous beginning and ending files for each lesson and more than 35 examples of third-party software. Some of the things I found to be covered in a thorough manner that are so often brushed over in other books are color theory and reproduction, color correction, apply modes, scanning, creating spot color and duotone files, advanced masking techniques, and advanced channel operations(CHOPS)including channel mixing, apply image, and calculations. Each lesson has a quiz to monitor your progress. There are several hands-on exercises for each lesson, and there are 6 or 7 labs for each chapter at the back of the book. On top of all of this we are given profiles on some of the people who have made Photoshop what it is today! This is definitely a book that I am going to encourage my college to use as the new text for Photoshop! I know it is the book I want to use!
