The Barnes & Noble Review
Oh boy, oh boy, Photoshop CS is out, and Scott Kelby’s got a great new tips-and-tricks book to go with it. If you make a living with Photoshop, you’ve probably seen Kelby’s Down & Dirty Tricks books before. Maybe you own one. Whatever you do, don’t get rid of it. Because this new one isn’t just terrific: It really is new. And very hot.

This is stuff you’ve wished you could do. Just follow the steps and you’re doing it. You know that trendy fashion blowout look -- the one you saw on Madonna’s American Life CD cover and Jet Li’s Cradle 2 the Grave movie poster? The one where skin tones turn completely white, leaving subtle shadow areas for the eyes and face? You own it.

Or how about the neat effect Apple used in the Mac OS X Jaguar logo? You’ve seen tips for doing this with Stained Glass, but they really aren’t up to snuff. Kelby takes a whole different approach, and you’ll love the results.

Or, one that’s after our own hearts: the 3D Hardcover Book Effect. (You knew if you lived long enough, you’d find a use for 3D Transform.)

Every page has a bonus tip: not a mere throwaway but a really useful idea. Kelby’s ideas come from nearly a decade’s worth of live seminars (he’s training director for the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour, and tech chair of the world’s largest Photoshop gathering, Photoshop World). They come from his column in Photoshop User magazine (where he’s also editor-in-chief). And they come from his personal interactions with Photoshop users worldwide (he’s president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, representing Photoshoppers from 64 countries). When it comes to Photoshop, Kelby knows everyone who’s anyone -- and sometimes it seems like they’re all feeding him tips.

Like, for example, Rich Harris’s technique for converting a photo into a color pencil sketch in 60 seconds flat.

Speaking of quick: In just five steps, Kelby shows how to add a sense of motion to parts of a photograph. (Great for high-end executive portraits that leave the subject in focus while adding movement everywhere else.)

While this isn’t the book for lengthy disquisitions on Photoshop CS’s new features, wherever one of them makes the job easier, Kelby’s all over it. It could be little stuff (F5 opens the floating Brushes palette again, as it did before Photoshop 6.) Or medium-sized stuff (for example, using the new Fill control to lower a layer’s opacity while leaving Layer Styles applied to that layer at full intensity. Or how about Photoshop’s new “fish” and “fruit” filters?). Or bigger stuff (not just the long-awaited “type on a path” support, but the ability to create curved ribbon banners within Photoshop -- no Illustrator needed).

The breadth of tips is amazing. Neo Grunge type. Side lighting. Glassy reflections. A very improved version of the video wall technique Kelby’s presented before. Shimmery DVD effects. 3D Photo Cubes. Easy product shot backgrounds. An easier page curl effect. Fake hand-drawn illustrations. Quick-and-dirty logo treatments. Diamond type effects. Bet there’s something great in here for your next project. And the one after that. And the one after that. Bill Camarda
