Description: Compiled by various authors from numerous specialties in the U.K., this book addresses adolescent psychiatry relating to the court system, primarily in the areas of treatment and assessment for this population.
Purpose: Due to increased involvement with the legal system in adolescence, and the importance of understanding violent and criminal behavior in adults, this book is intended to increase the awareness of issues particular to adolescents in the justice system.
Audience: This book will be of primary interest to psychiatrists and other mental health professionals dealing with this particular population. However, the editors point out the benefit it may provide to those treating adults with similar problems, as these behaviors frequently manifest in childhood or adolescence.
Features: Broken into sections, this book outlines the assessment, treatment, and delivery of services to this population. However, the authors also offer chapters of particular interest, including those discussing genetic and neurobiological factors in adolescents relating to criminal behaviors, and the relationship between offending behaviors and diagnoses, such as autism, schizophrenia, and substance misuse. There are some tables, graphs, and figures to highlight certain data, but these are not prevalent throughout the book.
Assessment: Although seemingly geared for a European audience, much of the information is universally useful and interesting. Chapters dealing with adolescent sex offenders and arsonists are particularly illuminating, if only to highlight how little we actually know about these behaviors. Overall, this book is well written and thoughtful in its approach. Reviews of juvenile justice systems in other developed countries is revealing, as it illustrates the global nature of the problem and how other cultures are attempting to address it. Works such as this are important steps in the more complete understanding of the reasons for this behavior, its assessment, and most importantly, its successful treatment.
