I love the conversational tone of this text. At many points, the editors put asides that give helpful information about research, about choices they made, or thoughts they had. Doing so encourages the reader to make comments and add their voice to the current conversation about adolescent literacy as well. I liked that a couple of chapters were in fact framed as conversations via emails so that the reader can hear and understand ideas and opinions of diverse experts in the field. This book is so rich. It's one of the most thought-provoking texts I've read on the topic in a while. The only negative I have is that it doesn't serve necessarily as a great introductory text, because it assumes some knowledge/ background, but as an instructor I solved that by bringing in other readings to fill in the blanks.

Meet the Author
Robert E. Probst, author of Response and Analysis, (Heinemann, 2004) is a respected authority on the teaching of literature. Bob's focus on engagement and literary analysis helps teachers learn the strategies to help readers approach a text with more confidence and greater skill. Professor Emeritus of English Education at Georgia State University, Bob's publications include numerous articles in English Journal, Voices from the Middle, and professional texts including Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice (Heinemann, 2007), and the forthcoming Heinemann book Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading (with Kylene Beers). He presents at national conventions including the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the Association of Supervisors and Curriculum Developers (ASCD), and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). He has served NCTE in various leadership roles including the Conference on English Leadership Board of Directors, the Commission on Reading, column editor of the NCTE journal Voices from the Middle, and is the 2007 recipient of the CEL Outstanding Leadership Award.
Linda Rief is the author or coeditor of five Heinemann titles, including Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), The Writer's-Reader's Notebook (2007), Adolescent Literacy (2007), Vision and Voice (1999), and Seeking Diversity (1992), as well as the author of 100 Quickwrites (2003). She is an eighth-grade teacher at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, New Hampshire, and an instructor in the University of New Hampshire 's Summer Literacy Institute. She is also a national and international consultant on issues of adolescent literacy. In 2000 she was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English/Language Arts. Her classroom was featured in the series Making Meaning in Literature produced by Maryland Public Television for Annenberg/CPB.
