Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Laura Gavanescu, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is an extensive literature review that provides a good understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adolescents and adults.
Purpose: It is designed as an overview with the aim of highlighting the current understanding of ASD in adolescents and adults. Despite the increasing number of individuals with autism in adulthood and the vast array of studies being published, not much is known about the development of ASD in adolescents and adults. This book does an excellent job of detailing the current research studies which address the challenges and other important topics for individuals with ASD.
Audience: It is appropriate for clinicians involved in the assessment and treatment of adults and adolescents with ASD. It is also a great source of information for anyone who wants to a better understanding of ASD.
Features: Among the many important topics the book covers are the concerns and roles of families of adults with ASD, the support they need to have a high quality of life, critical issues surrounding the transition from high school to adulthood, social skills interventions and the need for more effective ones, the complexity of romantic relationships and sexuality in this population, the challenges of effectively maintaining employment and how to prepare cognitively able students with ASD for a successful transition to college. It also covers a wide range of medical and health problems and the psychopharmacological treatments for them, residential programs and opportunities for individuals with ASD, a literature review of the risk of unlawful behavior. Adaptive behavior, the skills necessary to adequately function, is well described in one of the chapters which also provides an overview of the most common assessment methods. It also has a good overview of epidemiology and systematic intervention for adults with ASD. This book is not only a great review of articles and case studies, it also addresses the existing limitations in our knowledge base and the areas where future research is necessary.
Assessment: As a child psychiatry trainee, I found this book immensely valuable and a great source of information about this important topic. I would recommend it to anyone dealing with adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder.
