Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Hicks, a renowned adoption attorney, has updated his hallmark reference work, first published more than a decade ago. In Part 1, the author tackles critical adoption issues, beginning with the various kinds of adoption. While Hicks evaluates foster parenting and independent, international, and private and public agency adoptions, they get short shrift compared with independent adoption. Hicks then moves on to techniques for quickly locating a baby and arranging a successful adoption, even discussing what adoptive parents need to know about hospital and medical matters before and after the infant's birth. Finally, he supplies useful legal information, especially concerning the issue of consent on the part of the birth parents. Recommended for public libraries, though Brette McWhorter Sember's The Complete Adoption & Fertility Guide (see next page) may be a better choice given its more balanced discussion of adoption options. This is best for readers wishing to learn more about independent adoption. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

    Best how-to adoption book around!

I heard a guest on the Today Show recommend Adopting in America, by adoption attorney Randall Hicks and purchased the book, as my husband and I had finally made up our minds we were going to adopt. But how to do it was the big question! Adopting in America was a truly fantastic book. About the first half of the book breaks down the different types of adoption (more than I had ever heard of) and goes over the advantages and disadvantages of each each one. It really walks you through each step - how to select the right agency or attorney (with great tips on how to learn about them, not just trust what they tell you), how to spot a risky adoption to stay away from, how to find a birth mother to select you as adoptive parents (this was the BIG issue for us, and the creative ideas were wonderful and actually worked for us). The second half of the book gives you the laws of each state. Since all the states are different, this was great information. It also gave detailed professional information about hundreds of adoption attorneys who are members of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, and also listed every adoption agency in every state. I saw another review on this site which said the book was great but expressed disappointment the book recommended other adoption books by the same author. I looked back in the book after I read that and found it to be wrong. He recommends the best books out there, I would imagine to help adoptive parents get educated. Isn't that a good thing? He is the author of a children's adoption book, but the other books are very popular adoption books by other authors and other publishers. It is a small point, but it bothered me to see such a great book have even a small amount of criticism. This book's advice got us our daughter, now two months old!!!

    Run rabbit run!

The author gives the invaluable advice to prospective adoptive parents fully to educate themselves before trying to adopt, including selecting the right attorney. Well he is an attorney and he wants people to read, read, read, not the books which the people want to select but those listed at the back of Mr. Hicks' book, complete with order form. And wouldn't you know that these books are published by his own publisher. Run, rabbit run. Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?
