More About This Book

Overview

What is the Subject Area?

All distributed applications need to know where resources are to be able to use them. Active Directory is the mechanism for tracking resources (components, applications, users etc.) wherever they are on distributed networks. This is a book for experienced systems developers and programmers who would like to use HTTP (the protocol of the Internet) to deliver sophisticated system level solutions using light-weight client browsers.

Described in the book are applications, with code samples, that use Active Directory to manage users and user-groups, system services, file services, and the print queue. Although Active Directory can be used to access and manage different systems (NT 4.0, NT 5.0 (beta), NDS, LDAP Compliant, etc.) all of the code in this book will be using the NT 4.0 Server as a target system

What's Great About this Book?

  • No books and little other information out there to help developers
  • Gives an overview of the ADSI object model, and where ADSI fits into Windows DNA
  • Describes NT authentication and entitlements, the security of resources and 'logon local' issues. It will also discuss HTTP security as it is implemented in IIS
  • Provides an introduction to LDAP.
  • Backs all this up with great code examples

Who is this Book for?

This book is designed for experienced system developers and programmers using HTTP technology to deliver and receive data using browser clients.. The code concepts can, of course be transferred to other languages (Java, C++, Visual Basic «). There will be an assumed knowledge of several technologies, including HTML, HTTP, programming languages. Basic ADSI & LDAP terms will be explained up-front, with an appendix describing the terms and concepts in glossary format.

    It's an okay reference...

I think this book is okay for those who already have a grasp on using ASDI but want to know how to apply it in ASP, but anyone just getting started in ASDI might get frustrated.
