Advanced Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics brings together all of the key techniques and special tests needed in the clinical examination of of the patient with an orthopaedic problem into a single, coherent and easy-to-read volume.

The book adopts a systemic approach, taking each body region in turn, and a consistent structure, to aid rapid access to information. Each chapter is written by an expert in that area, and builds on the basic principles of inspection, palpation and movement to provide the reader with practical advice and background information on the most useful specific tests needed to make diagnosis more accurate.

Bullet points, tables, summary boxes and a wealth of clear colour photographs and line diagrams all help to present the information in an easily accessible and memorable format, and important hints and common pitfalls are highlighted throughout. Trainee and practising orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports physicians, rheumatologists and general practitioners.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book covers the physical examination techniques of the musculoskeletal system.
Purpose: The purpose is to have a single work that covers all the important examinations a clinician can use to thoroughly evaluate inspection, palpation, and movement. Their objectives are covered for most part.
Audience: The book is written for orthopedic clinicians and orthopedic trainees. It can be also useful for physiatrists and allied professionals such as physical and occupational therapists. The editor is an orthopedic surgeon from Leeds General Infirmary in the U.K. and his contributing authors are mainly from Sheffield and Leeds.
Features: Professional female models are used to demonstrate most of the adult examination. Two of the 12 chapters are devoted to the physical examination of the child. The abundant color photos are of excellent quality. Abnormal physical findings are only presented in the hand and pediatric sections. The references are adequate and the illustrations are most appropriate. The tools used to measure and standardize joint range of motion are not covered.
Assessment: With the advent of modern diagnostic methods such as the MRI, there is a growing tendency to rely less on the physical examination. The work restates the importance of the examination in the patient evaluation. In spite of several recent publications on the subject, this book successfully presents the material in an easy-to-read manner at the while being comprehensive but not necessarily "advanced." I recommend it to orthopedists, physiatrists, rheumatologists, and allied professionals such as therapists.
