Description: This book focuses on the association between human physical activity and what may be considered the normal and abnormal response for healthy and unhealthy persons. More importantly, it provides a brief introduction to and overview of many of the hormonal pathways and mechanisms that aid in controlling many of the physiological responses the body exhibits during exercise.
Purpose: The aim is to provide readers with a good understanding of how human physical activity is inherently related to neurohumoral pathways of the autonomic and somatic nervous systems. The author explicitly wants to demonstrate how these general pathways and their more specific subpathways act synergistically with all aspects of the human body to send and receive signals and stimuli to execute any type of human movement.
Audience: The audience is students with a good knowledge base in the exercise sciences and a familiarity with human physiology and biochemistry. Because it only provides a broad overview of many of the mechanistic pathways that hormones play in affecting physical activity, the book should not be used as an introductory level text for undergraduates, but rather as a reference for graduate students and/or professionals in this area of research.
Features: The book brings together the key findings of the primary literature on the topic of exercise and endocrinology, but also includes expert critiques and information from the author and her peers. Many figures, tables, and graphs throughout the book help to highlight important points.
Assessment: Authored by a well respected scientist and including the most up-to-date, peer-reviewed evidence, this book is a must have for researchers or academics as a current reference on the many concepts related to exercise and endocrinology as well as advances in the field.
