More About This Textbook

Both a study guide and a clinical resource, this new manual offers oncology advanced practice nurses a comprehensive review in preparation for advanced oncology certification tests and a valuable reference guide that can be used in everyday practice. Each chapter in this new resource addresses a topic important to advanced oncology nursing. Key points in each chapter emphasize concepts for readers to review while a case study raises relevant questions. In keeping with the manual's role as a study guide for certification, chapter content is correlated to the weight the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has assigned to a specific topic on the certification examination. Topics in this new manual are representative of the ONCC blueprints for the advanced oncology nursing certification tests so readers can feel confident that they are studying pertinent material. In addition, to further prepare students, practice test questions are offered in the final chapter in the same format as the ONCC advanced practice certification exams. Editors Barbara Holmes Gobel, Shirley Triest-Robertson, and Wendy H. Vogel are experienced oncology clinicians. Each has also served as faculty for the advanced oncology nursing certification review course at ONS national conferences and for a future online review course, providing you with best possible insight for test preparation. Yet, Advanced Oncology Nursing Certification Review and Resource Manual offers readers more than just a study guide for test preparation. Using the most current clinical evidence and literature available at the time of publication, the topics presented have been expanded and represent a valuable resource for oncology advanced practice nurses, graduate nursing students, oncology nurses in clinical practice, and other healthcare professionals. Whether you are preparing to sit for an advanced oncology nursing certification test or simply are looking for a comprehensiv

Reviewer: Lorraine Ellen Martinez, MSN, AOCN (University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center)
Description: Exactly as the title states, this is a review for advanced oncology nurses who are taking a national exam and a resource for use in everyday practice. The end of each chapter reinforces the material presented in the chapter and the case study section provides a nice synopsis.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide advanced practitioners with a foundation to prepare to sit for the national exam, whether it is the ONCC, AOCNS, or AOCNP. The book emphasizes the weighting of the specific topics as they would be seen on the exam. The second purpose is to serve as a resource for everyday use in the clinic and at the bedside. Although the book meets its objectives, it might be a little too basic for advanced practice nurses on a day-to-day basis. However, it is an excellent resource for oncology nurses in a clinic practice.
Audience: The manual is written for advanced practice nurses as well as oncology nurses in clinical practice, with a clear focus on oncology care. The authors provide a comprehensive list of references and have a strong background in clinical practice and education.
Features: All aspects of oncology care, including patient screening, prevention, and risk factors are covered. The authors address diagnosis, staging, treatment modalities, and clinical research. The book covers toxicities with each treatment modality, psychosocial management, and end-of-life care and explores the diverse nursing roles in oncology such as ANP and CNS. The authors have done an excellent job of bringing the material together using case studies and key points. The use of evidence-based nursing and online resources are also strengths of the manual.
Assessment: The book is well written and the chapters flow nicely. This is a useful tool, whether it is used as a study guide or as a clinical resource manual. The one change I'd like to see is the removal of The Joint Commission unapproved abbreviations.
