About the Author

In 2009, Tabitha Philen and her husband, Shane, felt trapped in a dark pit of financial problems. Being challenged to cut her budget by a financial adviser, Tabitha discovered that when combining coupons with sales prices and buying in quantities to build a stockpile, her grocery expense on each trip to the store was lowered by 50% to 90%. Since her coupon binder was saving them so much money, her husband named the notebook “Penny.”

In 2010, Tabitha wanted to be able to share her shopping tips and started a blog, A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned. She began writing as if her coupon binder were the author, signing everything as “Penny.” The website grew quickly and her readers assumed that “Penny” was her name.

In January 2012, Tabitha combined several websites into one, Meet Penny. At this new comprehensive website, she is able to write about frugal living and homeschooling as well as Autism, cooking, entertaining, blogging, and more.
Tabitha’s honors as a blogger include:

I have read plenty of books on couponing. Advanced Penny Pinching is by far the most informative and easiest to follow along with without overwhelming you. Tabitha is a mom trying to stretch her budget in today’s economy just like the rest of us. Not someone who couldn’t tell you the cost of a gallon of milk. That is why I know you will love her real world practical advice.

Saving in Sumner County

The best part of the book, in my opinion, was that Tabitha’s ideas were practical. She had ideas for saving in the kitchen that I can do even though I have four kids running around crazy. Her coupon savings were all honest and reasonable, something I don’t seem to find from some coupon sites.

Lovin' My Crazy Life

One of the things I appreciate about the Advanced Penny Pinching book is that it isn’t trying to sell you some technique to save thousands using coupon tactics or running all over town. Tabitha gives you real advice. She even has a section dedicated to answering questions about the extreme couponing shows you see on TV- and how those are not reality. And for those of us who have, at one point or another, really been in a bind- she shares her tips on making it through a week on $50.
