Description: This book represents the author's successful attempt to provide students and researchers with both an accessible and worthwhile advanced research methods text.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a a clear and solid understanding of research methods in psychology beyond the basics of ANCOVA and regression which are covered in more basic books. Thus, the book begins with ANCOVA and works up into more advanced topics. Without a doubt this book is a needed and welcome addition to the field.
Audience: It is intended mainly for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers within psychology. Clearly, this book will serve as an excellent teaching tool both inside and outside of the classroom and may be possibly carried over to other disciplines. The author's expertise and knowledge are unquestionable and demonstrated through this recent work.
Features: The book is well organized and well constructed to enhance readers' understanding of the material as well as to keep them focused and interested. Advanced topics such as ANCOVA, MANOVA, multiple regression, and logistic regression are covered in detail. Of particular interest are the chapters on questionnaires and scales which discuss scale design and construction, reliability, validity, and factor analysis. The discussion of qualitative methods is a much needed and welcome section. Finally, the uses and abuses of research in part six covers ethics, issues in design and statistics, writing for publication, and writing research grant proposals and is a must read for all researchers and students. The book is well-researched, the index is complete and helpful, and the illustrations help to explicate the material.
Assessment: This is one of the best advanced research methods books available today. The material is presented in a welcoming format to the reader yet maintains the necessary detail imperative for teaching research methods. This book is a true asset to the field of psychological research and has earned a place as one of the best books in psychology this year. Highly recommended.
