From The CriticsReviewer: Alexander B. Adams, RRT (Regions Hospital)
Description: This book is intended to provide readers with the skills and answers to pass the advanced respiratory therapist exams. Very well organized instruction is presented from all areas of the NBRC content matrix. An exam CD is included to simulate the sitting of the actual exam. This is an update of the version published in 1995.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare the reader to pass the advanced practitioner exams. In that regard the book's purpose does not include complete instruction or the overall goal of knowing and understanding material. Therefore, the book is needed for future test takers only. The author meets this objective well — the book teaches to the exam with detailed links to the text matrix and difficulty levels of the modules.
Audience: The book is written for future test takers of the advanced practitioner exams. This audience is either students, recent graduates, or practitioners who are about to challenge the exams or practitioners who have failed the exam and need the assistance provided by this book.
Features: Simply put, the content is directly from the exam matrix with instruction weighted toward the number and difficulty levels of the NBRC exam questions. This matrix was developed by the NBRC from therapist responsibility surveys. The instruction is thorough for that purpose — there are lists, tables, figures, and short answers. There are anecdotal exam hints throughout the text as well as an exam on CD. An understanding of material is not emphasized as much as answers.
Assessment: The book is of good quality and it compares favorably with — in fact, it improves upon —the other exam preparation text currently available. This book is a necessary update to the most recent exam matrix. Although it is a single purpose book, a test taker would be remiss in not using this to prepare for the exam.
