Purpose: The purpose is to provide advanced patient care information.
Audience: The target audience includes students and caregivers or patient care technicians who will perform advanced skills in acute care facilities, clinics, HMOs, home healthcare agencies, and other facilities.
Features: The book addresses such topics as sterile procedures, including preparing and working with a sterile field, using sterile technique, and performing sterile dressing changes and wet to dry dressings. Venipuncture technique is covered in several chapters as are intravenous procedures. Other areas covered include enteral nutrition, specimen collection, perioperative care, heat and cold applications, respiratory procedures (basic and advanced), cardiac care skills, and emergency procedures. The appendixes address guidelines for hand hygiene, abbreviations, and medical terminology and electronic communication.
Assessment: Most chapters contain special text boxes listing observations to be reported and recorded. Additional highlights include safety and infection control alerts and age related information. The layout and use of color illustrations is especially appealing and makes for a very interesting presentation.
