From The CriticsReviewer: Jon C Starr, MD (Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: This is a review of selected cosmetic surgical techniques used by aesthetic surgeons in North America and Europe.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive reviews of specific cosmetic surgical procedures. The editors specifically selected an international group of contributors so that all current techniques, products, and devices being used throughout the world could be discussed by experts in those fields. This worthwhile effort makes for some very interesting reading about certain topics that one may not have encountered before.
Audience: This is an advanced discussion written for the aesthetic surgeon who has experience in these techniques. The editors and contributing authors are all internationally recognized authorities on their topics. While many of these authors are paid consultants for a number of the products and devices reviewed in this book, no conflict of interest statements are provided, which does undermine the credibility of some discussions.
Features: The editors chose to review a specific set of techniques, indicating that the topics reflect the interests of the International Society of Dermatology. Hence, some subjects traditionally discussed in cosmetic surgery texts, e.g. face lift, neck rejuvenation, and brow lift, are not covered. The best aspects of this book are the international point of view and the comprehensiveness of the topics the editors chose to review. A DVD with videos of selected procedures is also included (e.g. Dr. Carruthers injecting botulinum toxin). The videos illustrate the techniques well, but are generally not narrated and there is wide variability in the completeness of the presentations. The DVD is an excellent concept and great addition to the book, but it would have benefited from stronger editorial and production guidance. Furthermore, many of the chapters are incomplete without the information on the DVD. Hence, this book is of little use to the reader who can't review the DVD. For example, Dr. Carruthers provides an excellent discussion on the DVD regarding botulinum toxin injection sites and technique, information that is not included in the written chapter.
Assessment: This is an advanced discussion written for the practicing surgeon who is experienced in these topics. The point of the book is to offer perspectives, techniques, and ideas that the reader may not have been exposed to in their usual literature.
