Description: This is a comprehensive discussion of mercury and its compounds from the standpoint of the environment, chemical transformations, environmental transport, bioaccumulation and toxicity. The editors have consistently framed a treatment of applicable concepts, critical review of knowledge, and an estimation of additional research needs. Judging by the thoroughness of modeling estimates (such as the GEOS-Chem model — global air-sea exchange estimates), the modeling, kinetic estimates, and other physical chemistry relationships are noteworthy.
Purpose: The editors note the significance of mercury as a global contaminant. They acknowledge the complexity of its biogeochemical cycling across the environment. In their view, only a comprehensive review of all aspects of mercury transformation and transport will permit a thorough understanding of the mercury cycle and attendant risks.
Audience: This book is written for scientific workers across fields such as atmospheric and earth science, air and water pollution, chemistry and chemical engineering, and the applicable health fields such as toxicology. It is thorough enough to use as an applied textbook for courses on mercury pollution and for more general environmental courses addressing global issues.
Features: After the preface and an overview of mercury in the environment, it is organized into four major sections: analytical developments (includes speciation and gas phase emissions), speciation and transformation (the mercury cycle, photoreactions, and sediment speciation), transport and fate (adsorption in aquatic environments and ocean-and terrestrial-atmospheric exchanges), and bioaccumulation, toxicity and metallomics (biomagnification in food webs, special notes for methyl mercury, the role of S-molecules and dietary issues).
Assessment: Given that the U.S. EPA notes one in six American women of childbearing age may be at risk of unsafe mercury levels, there might never be a better time for such a monograph. The editors are frank in noting what is known and still unknown regarding mercury cycling. This book is a marvelous contribution to the field.
