Volume 16 of Advances in Industrial and Labor Relations (AILR) contains eight papers that deal with important, interesting and in some cases controversial aspects of industrial and labor relations. These include psychological versus pecuniary approaches to establishing an ownership culture, accounting for union collective action through resource acquisition and mobilization, union avoidance through "double breasting" in multinational companies, labor-management partnership and mutual gains in public services, high-involvement work systems and union-management communication networks, implications for women of private pension reform and personal accounts, competing ethical conceptions of the minimum wage, and a new paradigm for IR/HR theory and research. Several of these papers were winners of and originally presented in "Best Papers" sessions at annual meetings of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (USA).
In keeping with the international perspective of and audience for AILR, the papers contained in this volume draw evidence from various national settings, including the USA, Ireland, and especially the UK. Also in keeping with this perspective, the editors of AILR are pleased to announce that Professor Paul J. Gollan of the London School of Economics (LSE) and Macquarie University has been appointed co-editor of this research series beginning with Volume 17. AILR will continue to offer IR/HR scholars the opportunity to publish longer, deeper treatment of their research than is typically possible elsewhere, and will also continue to provide swift (i.e., within 90 days of submission), in-depth appraisals of submitted manuscripts. The journal's editors encouragesubmissions from scholars across a wide range of disciplines and research methodologies, reflecting the view that no single theoretical or empirical approach should dominate industrial and labor relations studies.
