This is a compendium of the presentations, discussions, and workshops of the Fifth Congress of the International Society of Ocular Toxicology held in late 1996. The editors and organizers arranged the meeting around themes including ocular drug metabolism, the ocular pathophysiological effects of nitric oxide, regulatory issues related to alternative methods of toxicity testing, and a workshop on alternative in vivo and in vitro toxicity testing. The subject matter is important and the papers are informative. The book's contents are of interest to ocular toxicologists, pharmaceutical industry professionals, and regulatory officials. The contributors are leaders in these groups. The book is primarily composed of text and figures. The references in most of the articles are current and pertinent. The discussions are compiled from tape recordings at the meeting and are a positive addition to the book. For persons with an interest in any aspect of ocular toxicology or pharmacology, this book is a useful source of information.
