Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

'encompasses all aspects of mesothelioma from its diagnosis to its medicolegal implications'

'strong focus on the differential diagnosis of the disease, making sure mimics are excluded, is a significant strength of the book, as is a nice algorithm for use when making a diagnosis of mesothelioma on serosal biopsy'

'It is well written and provides the necessary aspects to aid in the accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma so that both heartache of the patient as well as of the diagnosing pathologist can be avoided.'

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Alan P. Martinez, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This book is a reference for all things mesothelioma or mesothelioma related, from its diagnosis at biopsy, staging, and even legal implications. It has a great mix of text, pictures, and algorithms to aid in the diagnosis of mesothelioma as well as exclusion of mimics, benign or malignant.
Purpose: The preface notes that the purpose is essentially to help pathologists arrive at an accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma and exclude benign or malignant mimics because of the serious implications a diagnosis of mesothelioma carries, including its dismal prognosis and legal implications. The objectives are worthy as mesothelioma is a rare entity and anything but a routine diagnosis, so it requires more thought and effort.
Audience: Practicing pathologists are the intended audience, but the book also could be helpful for residents. However, because of the rarity of mesothelioma, it is not a high enough yield book for a resident to acquire. Practicing pathologists may not use this book often, but when a diagnosis of mesothelioma is in question, it may be worth its weight in gold.
Features: The book encompasses all aspects of mesothelioma from its diagnosis to its medicolegal implications. The strong focus on the differential diagnosis of the disease, making sure mimics are excluded, is a significant strength of the book, as is a nice algorithm for use when making a diagnosis of mesothelioma on serosal biopsy. The book really is all encompassing and does not have any glaring weaknesses or omissions.
Assessment: Although this book will not be used on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis, it will be used and, when it is, it will prove a valuable asset. It is well written and provides the necessary aspects to aid in the accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma so that both heartache of the patient as well as of the diagnosing pathologist can be avoided.
