Reviewer: Brett C. Plyler, M.D.(Northwestern Memorial Hospital)
Description: This book, one in the APA's Annual Review of Psychiatry, describes the current treatments for bipolar disorder and its myriad aspects.
Purpose: The purpose is to organize and present the most current treatments for bipolar disorder based on interventions from controlled studies. Thee book meets the author's worthy objectives.
Audience: This book is written for practicing adult and child psychiatrists.
Features: It reviews the treatments for bipolar disorder in six different areas: acute mania, acute depression, long-term management, rapid-cycling, children/adolescents, and women with bipolar disorder. Each section is well written and includes data and treatment methods supported by controlled studies. The authors discuss the numerous anticonvulsant medications and the evidence for or against each in bipolar disorder. The section on acute depression is especially well done and reviews the difficult issue of antidepressant use in bipolar depression. The chapter on special treatment considerations of women looks at the problems of polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast-feeding, pregnancy, and contraception.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for any clinician treating patients with bipolar disorder. It gathers controlled study data for the use of anticonvulsants in bipolar disorder to bipolar depression treatment paradigms and places it in organized, understandable tables. The authors are all highly respected members of their field. It has numerous references so that readers can find the study data for review. The sections on acute depression, long-term management, and rapid cycling are especially useful. I would highly recommend that any practicing psychiatrist read this book.
