Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This collection of adventure stories by such luminaries as Alexandre Dumas, O. Henry, and Damon Runyan is part of the Graphic Classics series, in which classic texts are teamed with graphic artists who interpret the stories in comic book format. When this partnership works well, the art serves to enhance the stories' mood, plot, and characterization. It can be especially helpful for younger readers being introduced to these older stories, because these "thrillers" could seem tame by today's standards. When the pairing of art and words fails, the artist's choices can detract from the story, making it seem ridiculous or worse-boring. Comic books are a natural fit for these adventure stories-the drawings allow the reader to be pulled into the story's atmosphere, and the serial format works well with the genre's sudden twists. Some of the notable stories include The Masked Ball by Alexandre Dumas, illustrated in stark black and white by Michael Manning, and Two Men Named Collins by Damon Runyon, which Noel Tuazon illustrates in shades of grey that almost resemble watercolors. On the other hand, Robert W. Service's epic The Shooting of Dan McGrew is wildly misinterpreted by Hunt Emerson, who takes Service's noble savages of the Canadian frontier and turns them into Mad Magazine parodies. For the most part, the collection is serviceable and interesting, possibly tempting reluctant readers toward some of the more thrilling classics. The book is recommended for public and school libraries with graphic novel collections.
