Adventure Guide: Belize

Overview

"In mid-winter, when the gales off the plains of Siberia blow outside my window, I often close my eyes and visualize Belize. I see sun, sand and sea. I see white beaches, blue skies and clear waters. My memory, like a television camera, envisions the largest coral reef in the Americas, a world brimming with exotic life: eels, jellyfish, sharks and fish striped in green and red, or dotted in purple."

Overview

My memory, like a television camera, envisions the largest coral reef in the Americas, a world brimming with exotic life: eels, jellyfish, sharks and fish striped in green and red, or dotted in purple."

Belize is home to the longest barrier reef in the Americas. In its waters lie three of only four coral atolls in the Caribbean. It has the world's only jaguar reserve and the highest waterfall in Central America. Deep in the jungle are Maya ruins.

Join Vivien Lougheed as she takes you from the Santa Rita ruins on the country's northern tip to the offshore cayes surrounded by water colored a brilliant blue. Explore Belize City, departure point for water taxis to the cayes; Punta Gorda, a jumping-off point for boats to Guatemala; and tiny Hopkins, a tranquil Garifuna village. This book is simply brimming with practical travel tips and expert advice on everything from health, safety and paperwork requirements to exploring remote ruins and diving fantastic reefs. Lougheed tells where to find the best operator for a jungle trek, deep-sea fishing excursion or archeological hike. You'll even learn where you can join the Maya in the Hog-Head Dance celebrations. And there's plenty of guidance if you want to travel independently. Take a bus, charter a plane, or join the local cycling group to reach your destination. Hundreds of places to stay and eat are covered, along with cultural highlights and places you simply shouldn't miss.
