Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
The aim of this series is to assist children in developing ideas for creative writing both in stories and nonfiction. There are four adventures stories (Little Joe's Boat Race, Sinbad and the Whale, Saucy Monkey's Treasure Hunt, and Billy and the Wizard) that are the springboard for the child's imagination. Following each tale are a number of activities including, but not limited to, storyboards, creating a treasure map, writing a new story with the same characters, creating a wizard's recipe book, drawing and labeling a picture of a superhero, and making a weather book based on Little Joe's adventure. One of the best features of the book is the word bank of verbs and adjectives accompanying each sample story, encouraging writers to enhance their work with engaging sentences. The layout is colorful, directions are easy to follow, and the whole has a very child-like appeal. For a classroom teacher there is nothing new or original in these creative writing ideas but having them all in one book might be useful and a welcome addition to a classroom collection. For a parent wanting to foster and strengthen their child's writing skills this may just be the ticket to success. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
