Children's Literature
Josh and Emma Binkerton step into the derelict, but unusual Good Times Travel Agency. The owner, Mr. Pettigrew, gives them his personal guide to the Middle Ages. On the cover is written, "Open this book and your Journey's begun. Read every word and your journey is done." And in a flash, the children and their little sister, Libby, land in peasants' fields of the high Middle Ages. Unfortunately, they were hoping to arrive as nobles, and soon find that the life of the peasant is filled with hard work, little food and plenty of fleas. As they travel to the castle their adventure continues. They read the book and learn much about the time period, but the tome attracts much attention, since all books at the time are handwritten and valuable. The castle is attacked and the book is missing...will the children return home? Delightful ink and watercolor drawings with dialogue bubbles are sure to appeal to young readers. The text is informative and written with spunk and humor. Another time travel book featuring the Binkertons' features Egypt and other time travels are undoubtedly in the works. What a delightful way for children to learn history. 2000, Kids Can Press, $14.95 and $7.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Laura Hummel
This comic adventure of a family of fictional kids (The Blinkertons) is a very factual yet entertaining guide to the Middle Ages. The comic book format will appeal to reluctant readers, while keeping their attention with colorful illustrations and information about everyday medieval life. Part of the "Good Times Travel Agency" series. 2000, Kids Can Press, $14.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: N. Robertson SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Gr 3-6-In these picture books, twins Josh and Emma Binkerton and their younger sister Libby are transported back in time after opening a travel guide about a specific historical period at the creepy, ramshackle Good Times Travel Agency, and the only way to get home is to read the book cover to cover. Each page features the siblings' ongoing story, cartoonlike illustrations with dialogue balloons, and yellowed guidebook pages that provide basic background information about the period. The stories are full of slapstick, but hold together well and involve readers. Though the plots are contrived to tie into the guidebooks, they don't seem forced and the flow is good. The guides are written in a breezy style, paying just enough attention to the grosser aspects of each civilization to help maintain interest. Slavin's sunny pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are packed with details. Kids are sure to devour these lively books.-Donna L.
