Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

"America's first business manga" introduces Johnny Bunko, chained up in cubicle city and crunching numbers for the Boggs Corporation (bogg-ed down-heh heh) when he'd rather be doing almost anything else. Then in an office all-nighter, he snaps a pair of disposable chopsticks and snaps into being-a genie?! Diana, complete with mangastyle elf ears, promises to return six times to teach him the key lessons for career success and satisfaction. And-poof!-she's gone. Naturally, Johnny isn't buying this and gets coworkers Yuko and Carlos to witness these charmed chopsticks. Snap! There's Diana again with lesson one: there's no fixed "plan" that guarantees step-by-step career success and happiness. Later comes snap two: think strengths, not weaknesses. After four more snaps, Johnny has all the lessons and a better worklife. In his highly regarded A Whole New Mind(2005), Pink identified six "senses" as crucial for 21st-century professional survival: design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. His first shot at manga has all of these in an entertaining synergy that's perfect for students, recent grads, and cube dwellers of any age. Diana's timeless advice rings true, and the art is pleasant and effective, although the Japanese sound effects look strange in an American book. Recommended for high school, public, and academic libraries.

Johnny Bunko is helpful and makes sense.

Johnny Bunko is the story of one man's life and how much it stinks. He works at a dead end job at Boggs Corp, doing something he is bad at and doesn't enjoy, just because his parents and teachers told him to follow that career path. But his life gets turned around when he meets Diana, a magical nymph that appears when he cracks apart chopsticks from a special sushi bar.

Diana shows up when Johnny opens his chopsticks to give him pointers on how to succeed in the work place and in life in general. Each time that Diana shows up, he gets a new piece of advice, and each time he gets a piece of advice, he moves one step closer to turning his tedious life around into what he always wanted it to be.

    Not much here.

The Adventures of Johnny Bunko is a 160 page comic book but you can easily read it within half an hour and I'm not even a fast reader. The manga format is entertaining and keeps you interested but I wouldn't call this the last career guide you'll ever need by any stretch of the imagination.

This takes the idea of style over substance and prices it at $15. The six career lessons given read like sayings your parents would tell you. But that would be fine if Dan Pink would explore the concepts more. Instead I found myself close the book and wasn't able to remember any of the lessons I had just read. Unfortunately this doesn't have one of those "Big" moments in it where something slaps you in the face and you carry it with you trying to employ it into your daily life.

This is just one person's opinion because it could very well be that I just have parents who raised me on advice like the ones in the book. Its a half hour read so I'd recommend just reading it in the bookstore and if you have one of those "Big" moments, then buy it.
